Spark IM Client on Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I have setup an OpenFire IM server from Jive Software (Open Source Version) for the company I work for and we are using Jive’s Spark IM client on Windows XP clients. Jive does provide Spark for Linux but I kept running into an issue with a locking assertion failure. Here are my not-so-elegant [...]

If my 11 year-old can use Ubuntu…

Monday, February 25th, 2008

… you can too!
My in-laws generously donated a laptop for my daughter to use.  She loves it but XP was dragging it down a bit.  She is familiar with Linux and is especially fond of the game Frozen Bubble.  She was open to giving Ubuntu a try and so far so good.  I chose 7.10 [...]

ATI Video Drivers - Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Monday, February 25th, 2008

The standard video that Hardy Heron setup for my laptop was not bad.  It had 1440×900 resolution and looked pretty good.  There was no 3D acceleration but then again I don’t really need it.  I got to thinking that I wouldn’t be much of a geek if I didn’t figure out how to get my [...]

Flock Web Browser

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

I consider myself an early adopter and I jumped on the Firefox bandwagon pretty early. Since then I have been an advocate of Firefox for its security and especially for its cool addons.
My new adventure with Ubuntu has lead me to try many alternatives. Ubuntu installed Firefox 3 Beta but it is pretty [...]

Wireless on Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

The last obstacle crossed!
I had just about given up on Wireless and decided that if I was going to use Ubuntu I would need to be plugged in for Internet access.
When I fired everything up I was impressed to find that Ubuntu found my video and wireless cards.  I enabled the wireless card and was [...]

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron - Very Close

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

It is not a secret that I prefer Linux.  It is the ultimate server, modular, reliable, and free.  The desktop has lacked some.  My biggest gripes have been video, sound and wireless support.
My laptop supports a 1440×900 screen resolution and has a decent sound card.  I am very mobile so a wireless card is essential.
Introducing [...]

The Company Intranet - Part 1

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Our company has grown from running out of the President’s home to a multi-floor office. With this kind of growth communication can be difficult. When I arrived I was put in charge of maintaining IT but as you have read already, maintenance is not enough for me. To improve communication I have [...]

Merging PDF Documents - Pdftk

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I was given the task of merging 8 pdf documents into one document without access to Adobe Acrobat. Given my Open Source nature I thought “No problem!”
Yeah right!
I looked at several ways to do it including printing to postscript and using GhostGum to merge them but for some reason the PDF files would print [...]

Geek Alert! - CrystalXP Bricopacks

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I was reading MysticGeek’s Blog on HowToGeek.com and stumbled on CrystalXP’s Bricopacks. I installed the CrystalClear Bricopack and man is it cool. Here are some screenshots:

As you can see it adds a Mac-like ribbon at the top.

The start menu gets a big makeover making it sleeker and slimmer.

The notification area of the taskbar [...]

EXE to MSI Conversion

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

What a pain in the butt!
I decided to use Active Directory to distribute Visio Viewer to everyone on our network. I downloaded the viewer from Microsoft but they packaged it as an EXE and GPO requires MSI. Microsoft not offering one of their software packages in MSI? Hmmm…
Anyway, I tried a couple [...]
